The Post-AI Trust Gap
The Post-AI Trust Gap is the widening distance between how easily content can be generated and how rarely trust is earned, now that AI has made content infinitely cheap. Before AI, attention was scarce and content was valuable because it was hard to produce. After AI, attention is abundant — and the scarce resource is trust: the felt sense that a source, a brand, or a person is worth following.
Every marketing playbook you and I grew up on was built on one economic fact: content was expensive. It took real hours from real people, so whoever produced the most useful content won the most attention, and attention converted — eventually — into customers. That was the deal, and for twenty years it held.
Then execution became nearly free, every feed filled with competent, interchangeable content, and the deal quietly broke. The winners of the old game keep publishing more and watching it work less — the boulder gets heavier every quarter. What they're feeling isn't a content problem. It's a scarcity shift. They're optimizing for the resource that stopped being scarce.
The ladder, and where it breaks
B2B growth climbs four rungs, and each one earns something different:
- Attention Content, social, podcasts — earns a look.
- Credibility Books, research, speaking — earns intellectual agreement.
- Trust Events, community, shared experience — converts agreement into felt identity.
- Advocacy Word of mouth, referrals, category adoption — the compounding payoff.
Most companies climb the first two rungs and then jump — from credibility straight to hoping for advocacy. The trust rung is the one they skip, because it's the one that can't be automated. That skipped rung is the gap.
What closes it
Trust forms at density in shared experience — which is why the mechanism that closes the gap is the gathering, powered by collective effervescence. Presence is the one thing AI cannot generate, which makes the room the last channel where trust is manufactured faster than it decays. In the age of infinite AI-generated content, attention is no longer scarce. Trust is. And events are the fastest mechanism ever invented for manufacturing trust at scale.
